TEETH WHITENING SERVICES
Over time, teeth can become stained and discoloured by coffee, tea, cola, red wine and even smoking. The use of some antibiotics can cuse dark grey stains to appear on the surface of teeth. Teeth whitening is an effective treatment for most types of teeth discolouration. The most common form of teeth whitening is professional bleaching to brighten stained, discolored teeth.
During the teeth whitening procedure, a specially made tray will be fitted over your mouth and teeth. A whitening gel containing an active ingredient such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide will then be introduced into the tray so that it can adhere to the surface of your teeth. As this active ingredient is broken down, it leaves a residue of oxygen on your teeth which lightens the tooth color. Typically, the complete teeth whitening treatment takes between three and six weeks. The patient also must apply a whitening product at home for two to six weeks for two to three hours at a time.
Dental crowns are used to repair a damaged or decayed tooth. The dentist will make an impression of the tooth using a rubber-like material. This impression – along with data about the color and shade of the tooth – are then sent to an outside laboratory where a technician will make the actual crown. During the two weeks or so while this is taking place, a temporary crown is usually fit over the tooth. When the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed and the dentist fits the permanent crown in place.
Dental crowns can be made from a variety of different materials. Among the most common are porcelain or porcelain bonded to gold, although new materials for dental crowns are constantly being developed. During your consultation with your Bendigo Dentist Clinic dentist, you will learn about the best crown options for your situation.
If you don’t want to wear dentures or have only one or two teeth missing, a dental bridge may be your best option. Typically, your dentist at Bendigo Dental Clinic will crown the teeth on either side of the gap then attach a false tooth in the middle. These conventional bridges are fitted the same way as crowns and usually are composed of precious metal bonded to porcelain. In cases where additional strength is required, non-precious metals are sometimes used for dental bridges.
An alternative to dental bridges or dentures are dental implants. These tend to be more costly, however. They are composed of titanium rods which are surgically implanted into the jawbone. A small portion of the rod is left sticking out through the gum. Dentures or crowns can then be affixed to these rods to create a secure and stable fit.
Dental veneers are an ideal way to treat discoloured or unsightly teeth, gaps between front teeth, and to repair tooth cracks and chips. They are made of thin slices of porcelain that are precisely fitted to cover the visible portion of front teeth.
To make a dental veneer, your Bendigo Dentist Clinic dentist will make an impression of your tooth and send it to an outside laboratory. There a technician will make your veneer to precise specifications. Once it is returned to the clinic, your dentist will bond it to form a strong and natural-looking repair.
In some cases, a natural colour “composite” material is used for the dental veneer rather than porcelain. In many cases, composite veneers can be completed during a single visit to the Bendigo Dentist Clinic.
